"According to preliminary information, 5 people have died and over 160 are feared trapped. The boulders from the hill fell on around 44 homes in Malin village in the Ambegaon taluka very early this morning,” Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan told reporters.
The village is located around 70 kilometres from Pune city and has a population of over 700 people. It is close to the Bhimashankar Jyotirling temple.
The incident occurred very early in the morning, when most of the villagers were asleep in their homes.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been rushed to the location. Several cabinet ministers, including Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar have rushed to the spot.
Rescue operations were hampered by the continuous rains in the area.
